How to Prep for Your Botox or Filler Appointment (and What to Avoid After)

October 14, 2025

Booking your first aesthetic appointment can come with a mix of excitement and questions. At About Face Aesthetics, we make sure you're not just prepared—but confident—every step of the way.

Whether you’re coming in for Tox - Wrinkle Injections or Filler Injections, this guide will help you know exactly how to prep before your appointment and what to avoid after to get the best, longest-lasting results.

Before Your Appointment: How to Prep Like a Pro

1. Skip Blood Thinners (If Safe for You)

About a week before your visit, avoid medications and supplements that can increase bruising. This includes:

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

  • Vitamin E

  • Fish oil

  • Ginkgo biloba

  • St. John’s Wort

Always check with your doctor first, especially if you’re taking these for medical reasons.

2. No Alcohol 24 Hours Before

Alcohol can thin your blood and increase your risk of bruising and swelling. A glass of wine might seem harmless, but it’s best to hold off the day before your appointment.

3. Stay Hydrated and Eat Normally

Drink plenty of water, and don’t come on an empty stomach—especially if you’re receiving filler. Low blood sugar can make you feel lightheaded during or after treatment.

4. Avoid Major Dental Work Right Before or After Filler

We recommend spacing dental appointments at least 2 weeks apart from any dermal filler treatments, especially around the mouth. Dental work can involve pressure and movement that could interfere with your results.

5. Come with a Clean Face

If you can, arrive without makeup. We’ll cleanse your skin before treatment, but starting with a fresh face helps us assess your natural movement and structure more clearly.

6. Be Honest About Any Events or Travel

Got a wedding, photoshoot, or beach trip coming up? Let us know! We’ll help you schedule the ideal timing to make sure any swelling or bruising has resolved—and your results are peaking when it counts.

After Your Appointment: What to Avoid

1. Don’t Touch or Rub the Area

After Botox, avoid rubbing, massaging, or leaning on the treated areas for at least 4–6 hours. This helps prevent the product from moving out of place.

2. Skip the Gym (Just for a Day)

We love a good workout too—but intense exercise can increase circulation and lead to swelling or bruising. Skip it for 24 hours post-tox or filler.

3. Avoid Saunas, Facials, or Heat Exposure

For 24–48 hours after treatment, avoid:

  • Saunas

  • Hot yoga

  • Tanning beds

  • Intense sun exposure

These can increase swelling or irritate freshly treated areas.

4. Don’t Schedule Anything Major That Day

While most clients experience little to no downtime, mild swelling, redness, or pinpoint bruising is totally normal. Plan your appointment at least a day or two ahead of important events—especially for filler.

5. Ice (Gently), Sleep (Elevated)

A cold compress can help reduce swelling, but don’t apply pressure. Sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated for the first night can also help reduce puffiness.

6. Be Patient with Results

Botox takes 5–7 days to start working, and up to 14 days for full effect. Filler results are visible immediately, but they settle over the next week. If this is your first time, don’t panic if things look a little uneven in the first few days—your provider will schedule a follow-up if needed.

FAQs From Our Midlands Clients

Can I wear makeup afterward?
We recommend waiting at least 4–6 hours before applying makeup to treated areas—especially after filler.

Is bruising normal?
Yes, especially with filler. Everyone’s body reacts a little differently. Arnica gel can help reduce the appearance of bruising if needed.

How long will my results last?

  • Botox: typically 3–4 months

  • Filler: anywhere from 6–12 months depending on product and area
